Thanks not today for the feedback.

It's good to her others points of views. I've never been so hung up on denominations and all the glitter, though I do tend to lean towards non-denom. I grew up baptist and there was a lot of judgement involved. My search I guess is finding a place where I belong or feel like i fit in as much as it is finding a place that still adheres to truth. I realize there will always be short comings and lack, but in my search I have seen some things that left me feeling empty and wondering how is this the "Church" jesus said he would build his rock upon. To be honest I like the smaller settings of church the ideals that the first century Church lived small, groups of friends. I had found that in a Church back home but was unable to remain due to conflicting schedules. I hope to find something much like that again soon.

Thanks again.

Nate,
After church hunting for the last year, we finally found one that didn't feel was this big giant advertisement, or one that has totally transformed the gospel to suit their own convictions and shortcomings. We did stumble across what seemed to be the complete package, outstanding music that got everyone involved and outside the box style services where attendees can text in their questions to the speakers and they were adressed on the spot, wow how great is that especially in a large church that you would never get the ear of the pastor. All these things can be great tools to help minister to all sorts of different personalities. But, we found that the one thing that almost all of these churches lacked was a genuine desire to reach or minister to the flock. Instead what was fealt was this is a business and they were trying to put out the best product to have better sales, and by better sales I mean larger offerings and tithes.
We did find a wonderful church, (not big, not fancy) that when we went, we just fealt this overwheming peace and presence that we new from the first time, this was were we needed to be. It wasn't easy to leave our previous church where we were known and had established a place in the church, but it was needed for our kids sake. We kept an open mind, we weren't going to be stuck on denomination or lack there of, and to be quite honest there was one Lutheran church that we attended that ( I would have never , ever , ever considered) I ended up really liking. It is possible to find the right church especially if you can come to the realization that God does not reside with only one denomination.
There are still some churches out there that remain faithful to seeking God for it's direction in ministry and the Sunday sermons as well. While others unfortunatly remain unispired and lack the effort to seek God's face to show them the direction and message for their church and would rather download sermons from the internet.
One last note, we must remember to keep our faith in God, not in man, for we will surely be disappointed otherwise. I'm a bit all over the place here but I think I covered the main objective God Bless and may you find the peace that surpasses all understanding!!

I'm in no doubt that there is too much of a work ethic in the West. It's somehow woven into our culture to overproduce. The story about the businessman and the Mexican fisherman puts things into a better proportion.

Good point Vincent, there are for sure things we must endure even if we wish not too. I wonder what this meaning in a relational sense to our lives and if it should be difficult or needing to be endured.

Excellent topic! One of the meanings of "work" is that which we do because we have to rather than that which we want to. So someone who enjoys his vocation may say, "It's not work for me---I get paid for doing what I love". And I think "happiness" means not wanting to change a thing: falling into something quite naturally. I'm retired from work so I feel the freedom every day but sometimes I may do volunteer work, unpaid, or help a friend with my services & get paid for that. Having agreed to do these things, I accept the time and quality constraints and so it often ends up that I don't enjoy doing them. They are "work" and I would be "happy" if suddenly I didn't need to do them; just as a child is happy if for some reason school is closed for a day.

Nate,

You make some valid points, but what is missing is the big picture. First I would maybe classify the problem as people not being mindful of others and seeing the big picture. Example; I am in a store trying to make my way through an isle infront of me is a small group of people facing me, they look at me and see me coming. Do they move so that I may pass by and go on my mary way? No, instead they wait until I am face to face and finally have to say excuse me before anyone of them decides to step aside so that I may come through. Are they trying to offend me? No! Are they being inconsiderate? Yes! Do they see the big picture? "Here comes someone, I/we are blocking the entire isle I should move so they can pass by" or maybe their thought process is this " What's this guy doing? Where is he going? Why is he looking at me? Is he gonna try and pick me up? Oh my God I'm not gay what the @#$%^&*%# am I gonna do? He's getting closer OMG he's starting to give me a dirty look what the heck is wrong with this guy? I'm just standing her and he's giving me a dirty look, what a %&*%$#@. I'm not gonna move for this jerk who does he think he is?
People are weird and messed up, so many are just plain neurotic. They have no grasp on the big picture. "I'm just shopping and you are in the way, please move." So many people are just plain oblivious as to how they are impacting those around them, "slam on the brakes last minute, almost missed your turn whew that was close, as you mouth sorry to the guy that you just cut off as he is glaring at you mouthing explicatives in your general direction.
Sometimes the best way to approach these inconsiderate people is, sir I am not sure that you are aware of how what you are doing is affecting everyone around you. "excuse me you guys are blocking the whole isle and their are people that are trying to get by." Nicely
And then sometimes their are those that just don't care about how what they are doing is inconveniencing or having a negative impact on others. But as it is, we are in a society that is in close quarters, everyday we all do something that impacts others in both negative and positive ways. I too get so frustrated and annoyed with peolpes lack of respect or thoughtfulness towards others. It has kind of helped me to understand things a bit clearer being married to someone that is oblivious, themselves, to the big picture. The common response is, "jeeze you always act as if it's a big conspiracy that I'm trying to offend you or out to get you." Oblivious to their surroundings and the big picture, if I do this what will that do to those around me.
Many people, including and maybe especially Gen xers are very egoccentric and lack the awareness or ethics to care about those around them. This is unfortunately getting worse as to those that have poor etiquette are now raising their kids with even poorer etiquette.

So in a nutshell the world is indeed going to hell in a hand basket.

God Bless us all and may we always be more mindful of the impact we have on our surroundings.

God Bless us all and may we always be more mindful of the impact we have on our surroundings.

1. Order pizza and other food to their house and pick it up at their doorstep claiming that you don't have a phone.
 2. Stand over the plants in your yard with a hose and Scream, "I have your life in my hands, bow down to me!". Then point at each one and declare them good or bad plants, while watering the bad ones.
 3. Bring them restraining orders on inanimate objects in their house. (i.e., chairs, books, lamps, etc.)
 4. Ask them if you can put your trash in their cans, if they ask why say, "Mine are full of bodies," then stutter and say, "I uh mean other garbage," walk away laughing hysterically.
 5. Patrol the perimeter of your yard while carrying a broom. If they come close state that there is a 3 foot neutral area between the two yards.
 6. At night transplant the plants in their garden. In the morning say, "looks like they're on the move again."
 7. When they're watching TV, pull a lawn chair behind their window. Sit down with popcorn and a drink and ask them if they could open a window so you can hear too.
 8. Build snowmen with name tags of your neighbors Each day hack off a different part of their body.
 9. Use your TV remote to change the channels on their TV from outside. If asked why, say you protest such programs. (The more educational the program the better.)
 10. Dig shallow graves at night filling your yard with brown grave patches. Make markers out of household appliances.

I know this is for house living but I thought you might find it helpful.

I know I've had some BADDDDD neighbors and had it out with a few of them.. can you believe that one even asked me what the Jesus fish symbol on the back of my truck ment?? UGH... But in the end we both moved. I hope it gets better for the sake of you, your beautiful wife and daughter to be! By the way how is that going?

Yeah I know a few people that are like this, not a good thing. These are people who are old enough to know better but refuse to care and act as though they have a right, no, a duty to treat people poorly? I don't get it.

everything worth doing in life meets a resistance. Call it cultural inertia if you will.

Hi Steven, thanks for your comment. I agree there are many churches that are humble and wonderful. I guess a bit of background is in order. I am from Portland Oregon which is said to be the most unchurched state, so a lot of this came from my perspective of that issue. I think this post was my way of drawing attention to those "false churches" if you will not to add fuel to a fire perhaps. My wife and I are working our way back into getting closer to God and are seeking a new Church we hope to find one soon and to become closer in our daily lives.

The word "church" is not a religious word. It simply means "gathering". Sure there are churches that ought not to be called churches, but that ought not surprise. We were warned that wolves in sheep.. you know the rest.
But God has chosen to work through the church Ephesians 3.10 10so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
So Jesus is interested in you joining a church because that is where is has decided to reveal his purposes. There are some wonderful and humble churches, keep looking. And lastly, don't be a part of the problem, but a part of the solution. Contribute to church.

You'll make it. Stop worrying so dang much about doing the right thing, you have what it takes to be a good Christian man inside you already, don't mess it up with worry! You have always been a worrier, and that can get in our way just as much if not more than caring too little. One day at a time. And remember that was then, this is now. The only way to have room for all the great things your new life can offer you is to let go of the past, maybe I'm not helping with that being on your blog, but it's inspiring to see what you have done so far. Keep going , one foot in frontof the other. OK? OK (slams door here) lol

Leadership is bad, Morals have fallen, I see this change in our society even in the short distance from my childhood until now. It's not new, it's just worse now and hit's home more because we as individuals face this often in our everyday lives. We need to choose to not reward those who choose to abuse others and their power.

I know what you mean. Leadership around the world is deplorable. It seems that we live in a time when the average citizen is more enlightened than the average world leader.

I am sorry for your loss.

I had a boyfriend in jr. high... we was great... Though I was stupid.. as I can be a lot... he then hated me for it... and he never spoke to me again. He was popular in high school. Everyone loved him.. I felt terrible about us not talking... it hurt deep inside.

A year after high school ended I found out at work that he had been killed in a car accident in Hawaii. I attended his service, as did most of our high school.

Just last year I was at goodwill (great place to get kids VHS tapes for super cheap!!) and I found his high school letterman's jacket. I shed a tear once again. I wanted to get it... but just as his parents had done I am sure.. what would I do with it? However, in the pocket was a note card with a couple chicken scratches on it and a drawing.. I took it and put it in my memory box.

If only they (those that we've hurt or that have hurt us) could know that we care/love them still and that no matter when, how long or short the relationship (friends, lovers, mothers, brothers.. ect) was that their memories are forever burned into our soul and carried with us no matter where we go in life, maybe just maybe then they would/could forget the past and remember the love.

I am sorry for your loss, it is always heart breaking no matter how distant the friend.

I agree that that large companies ought to do more things like this. I've seen the millionaire show a few times it seems pretty good, though I watch more TV now then before which I don't like. There's not too much to do in B.C.

I think there is more that we as a country can do, although it bothers me that we can not get our own health care system in the U.S. taken care because of corporate greed, we should have free health care.

That's great, I've always been one to buy for Breast cancer, seeing as nearly everyone in my family has had it or a scare of it.... So when I see pink I almost always buy. It is great to see a large company do something for a cause rather than pocket every penny! It's the season for giving.... Wish more places give out. Speaking of which, have you seen the new reality show 'Secret Millionaire'? I don't watch a lot of the boob tube but it is a very good show... makes you think!

My wife and I (Portland natives) have been living in Grand Rapids, MI for the past few years. We got hammered pretty hard out there last week. Right now we're in Portland visiting family for Christmas. We were hoping to get out of the snow for a few days but - obviously - that didn't work out for us. But in any case, Portland is a beautiful city - rain, snow, or sun - and we're really hoping to move back here as soon as I finish grad school :-)
